The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) and the Small Cell Forum have announcedthat they will work together to integrate Wi-Fi hotspots and licensed smallcells.Telecom operators worldwide are increasingly deploying both licensed andunlicensed technologies - in the form of small cells and public Wi-Fi - makingthis an opportune time to examine how they can be best integrated. The two organizations will cooperate on a range of initiatives includingsimple measures such as looking at how small cells could impact the WBA and GSMA'sefforts to simplify Next Generation Hotspot (NGH) access, and sharing bestpractices for optimizing the user experience and operator deployment strategiesfor joint Wi-Fi/small cell hotspots. The WBA's NGH program is already making public Wi-Fi more accessible byremoving the need for usernames and passwords. Major operators globally arecurrently trialling these new hotspots and deployments are expected imminently. However, more ambitiously, the organisations will also look at how tointegrate Wi-Fi and small cells on a network level, instead of simply usingWi-Fi to provide a pipe into the cellular network. This could allow Wi-Fihotspots to support cellular services such as voice and SMS, as well as enableenhanced integrated services such as advanced traffic management and smartoffloading features over the radio interfaces as well as within the backendnetworks, resulting in the best possible user experience.JR Wilson, Chairman of the Wireless Broadband Alliance said: "Thisagreement builds a bridge between the Wi-Fi and cellular worlds. Our twoorganisations bring together the key fixed, mobile and Wi-Fi operator and vendorplayers. Furthermore, we both enjoy close relationships with the respectivestandards bodies - the Wi-Fi Alliance, IEEE and 3GPP. This means we have theclout to turn the vision of integrating Wi-Fi hotspots and small cells into areality. The NGH program will now encompass the advances that emerge from thisnew cooperation paving the way for a truly converged future. Customers willbenefit from a highly dependable, easy to use, seamless service across manydifferent network technologies."
Vodafone India will be deploying USSD based services, based on a platformsupplied by Myriad Group.T-Mobile is marking 15 years since the launch of its network in the CzechRepublic with a week of prices for mobile data users.Finland's DNA says that it is to deploy new technology and more base stationsin its 3G network.T-Mobile Croatia has announced that it will start to sell the Nokia N9 -- thefirst smartphone running on MeeGo operational system jointly developed by Nokiaand Intel -- from next month.Zain's Sudan subsidiary has awarded a mobile advertising contract to JinnySoftware.USA based LightSquared has signed an LTE wholesale agreement with the devicemanufacturer, AirTouch Communications. LightSquared has now signed 15 partneragreements.UK based Hutchison 3G is extending its unlimited mobile data tariff to allsubscribers from the 7th October for an additional monthly payment.Japan's Softbank Mobile is to embed Skyhook's Location Engine in itsFemtocell base stations
USA based Sprint Nextel says that it has deployed its first multi-mode basestation, as part of its wide ranging network upgrade plan. The new base station can radiate multiple spectrum bands (1.9GHz and 800MHz)from a single base station, powering both CDMA 1x and EVDO services. The new base station is fully integrated with the existing network andinitial tests show performance improvements are in line with expectations.Announced in Dec. 2010, Network Vision is a blueprint to consolidate multiplenetwork technologies into one seamless network. Through spectrum efficienciesassociated with Network Vision, Sprint intends to repurpose some of its 800MHzspectrum for Sprint 3G service, thereby enhancing coverage, particularly thein-building experience for customers. Augmenting its 1.9GHz footprint with800MHz, Sprint expects its CDMA coverage density will increase throughout thecountry.Network Vision is expected to cost an incremental $4 billion to $5 billionand deliver $10 billion to $11 billion in net economic value to the companybetween 2011 and 2017, with a projected NPV of approximately $6 billion. Theprimary components of value come from reduced roaming, cell-site reduction, theelimination of dual networks, backhaul efficiencies, reduced churn, moreefficient use of capital and energy cost savings.Sprint previously announced that Network Vision is a three year program withmarket deployments beginning in 2012 and ending in early 2014. Sprint expects tomake additional announcements about market deployments early next year.
IMS Research projects that 2013 will be a big year for the emergence of RadioFrequency (RF)-embedded light bulbs, with several large manufacturers planningto release new products using a range of wireless technologies.Shipments of RF-embedded light bulbs and their associated remote controllerswill be more than 600,000 in 2013, rising to 11.7 million in 2017, according totheir forecast. There are several drivers to push the market for these devices forward. Oneof the most important is the ability to control the lights using a smart phone, which can provide both in-home control, and for some systems, remote-accesscontrol from outside. It is expected that over the forecast period, most ofthese systems will offer remote access via an app, or cloud-based service. Whilethis feature is available on current residential lighting control systems, thecost of these systems can be too high for most consumers. The RF-embedded lightbulbs will be sold at a more consumer-friendly, leading to higher residentialadoption.According to IMS Research Analyst Phillip Maddocks, "We have already seenexcitement about these types of systems with the recent successful launch of theInsteon RF and Powerline LED bulb as well as Li-Fx system that managed togenerate very significant investment in a few weeks- this shows the potential ofthis market. In addition to this, several tier-one lighting suppliers areplanning to launch similar systems towards the end of 2012 and throughout 2013,which will bring such systems to the consumer market."From a technology perspective, currently most RF-embedded light bulb systems, such as that of Insteon, use a proprietary technology or use a proprietary802.15.4 software stack. Greenwave Reality is currently showcasing NXP'sJenNet-IP protocol which, according to NXP, is being made an open platform forother semiconductors to support. In addition to this, the ZigBee Alliancerecently launched a lighting-specific profile "ZigBee Light Link" which isdesigned specifically for the control of both color and light level of LED lightbulbs. Currently several tier-1 lighting manufacturers, such as Osram andPhilips, have already had devices certified using this protocol."Over the next few years, there will be the development of severalecosystems of devices using different technologies before a dominant standardemerges," added Maddocks. "With the support and the interoperabilityavailable as part of the ZigBee Light Link protocol, IMS Research believes thatby 2017, ZigBee will have emerged as the main wireless technology being used inthese systems, accounting for 38 percent of all RF-embedded bulbs andcontrollers shipped between 2010 and 2017".
The market for RFID transponders, readers, software, and services willgenerate $70.5 billion from 2012 to the end of 2017. The market was boosted by agrowth of $900 million in 2011 and the market is expected to grow 20% YOY perannum. Government, retail, and transportation and logistics have been identifiedas the most valuable sectors, accounting for 60% of accumulated revenue over thenext five years.ABI Research Group director John Devlin comments, "To date, the automotivesector has been a strong proponent of RFID, largely for immobilization andkeyless entry. However, penetration is already high and it will be constrainedby the slower rise in automotive production volumes. As a result, it will losestatus as a leading RFID market due to other established markets for RFIDretaining excellent potential for further adoption. Retail in particular is setto experience very strong growth- in fact, it will become the single largestRFID sector in 2015."Efficiency and improved operational capability are the overriding goalsbehind this adoption. Retail growth is driven by the proven returns that itemlevel tagging can deliver. Stock is less likely to get lost, shop floors betterstocked, and the ordering process will get smarter. RFID will cross over intocustomer-facing services with NFC for product information and smart marketing.Government is a high-value sector, with strong uptake of contactless/RFID indocuments and credentials. However, the drive for increased efficiency inapplications such as asset tracking, fleet management, personnel location, andsecurity are increasing the sector's acceptance and uptake of RFID solutions.Transportation and logistics increasingly make use of the ability toaccurately track and trace items and goods at item, pallet, and container levelas service providers look to generate more detailed data for themselves andtheir customers. Also, smarter public transit systems are utilizing contactlessticketing as the basis for better managed and cost effective services.
