Phone manufacturers have had a wake-up call on brand loyalty as the latestfigures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech show that consumers are increasinglychoosing phones because of their operating system (OS) rather than handsetbrand.57% of all phones bought in the 12 weeks to 20 March 2011 were smartphones,compared with only 31% in 2010. As a result, there is a growing awareness amongconsumers about operating systems.Fiona Keenan, Consumer Insight Director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech,explains: "Although some consumers still need educating about operatingsystems awareness is growing and this is starting to influence consumers'purchasing decisions."12% of smartphone owners claim they will choose their next handset solelybased on its OS and a further 44% say it will play a part, demonstrating loyaltyis starting to shift towards OS providers. This will be a big challenge forhandset manufacturers, who will need to find a way of connecting further withtheir customers or alternatively working more directly with OS providers tooffer consumers something that differentiates them from their competitors in thehandset world."Loyalty to operating systems varies by provider, with loyalty at its highestamongst Android users at 25%, compared to only 8.9% amongst Blackberry users. AsAndroid continues to grow (in the latest 12 weeks Android accounts for 43% ofSmartphone sales) and becomes available across many handset brands consumerswill have more and more options to remain loyal to their OS whilst opting for adifferent handset brand each time.Fiona continues: "There is also a clear link between how engaged a consumeris with their phone and loyalty to the OS. Among heavy smartphone users, thosethat download more than five apps a month, the OS is more likely to influencetheir decision, with 18% of heavy users stating they would base their purchasechoice on the OS."
Amazon has announced the launch of its own in-app purchasing system forAmazon App Store developers working on Android and Kindle apps.Amazon Appstore's In-App Purchasing service is simple for developers tointegrate and helps monetize their apps and games, while offering customers aseamless and secure 1-Click purchasing experience."Amazon Appstore's In-App Purchasing service enables developers togenerate more revenue from their apps," said Aaron Rubenson, Director ofAmazon Appstore. "In-App Purchasing is simple to integrate and givesdevelopers access to millions of Amazon customers who are already familiar withAmazon's 1-Click payment system. Social networking service, Facebook has decided to copy Twitter and introduceso-called #hashtags to allow discussions by a number of people to be linkedtogether by a single phrase.Facebook has long wanted to avoid looking as if it is copying Twitter, butwith a number of other social media services, such as Google+ and Pinterest alsosupport the hashtag, the facility is now seen more as an industry standard thana Twitter specific feature."To date, there has not been a simple way to see the larger view ofwhat's happening or what people are talking about. To bring theseconversations more to the forefront, we will be rolling out a series of featuresthat surface some of the interesting discussions people are having about publicevents, people, and topics. As a first step, we are beginning to roll outhashtags on Facebook." Facebook product manager Greg Lindley said in a blogpost.The main use for hashtags is for live conversations, and that has long been astrong argument used by Twitter when pitching its audience to advertisers. Theycan target those live debates with strongly targeted adverts.Facebook will now doubtless be making the same arguments to its advertisers.Of course, hashtags are also prime territory for spammers, which Facebookwill also have to deal with.
